01 · THE METHOD
How the chess-based learning methodology works
The methodology is delivered through programmes, mini-games and collaborative exercises adapted to the age and learning level of each group. Chess provides a clear framework for practising focus, decision-making and cooperation. It builds on educational practice developed by Dansk Skoleskak over three decades.
FROM PURPOSE TO PRACTICE
Four steps from purpose to practice
The process begins with a learning goal rather than a chess result. Facilitators choose mini-games, positions and collaborative tasks that fit the group’s age, experience and context. Each activity creates a concrete situation in which participants can practise attention, planning, communication or self-regulation. Reflection then connects the experience to learning beyond the board.

Define the learning goal
Start with the skill, behaviour or subject knowledge participants should have an opportunity to practise.
Select and adapt the activity
Match the rules, challenge and language to the group instead of assuming prior chess mastery.
Facilitate action and dialogue
Let participants make choices, explain their thinking and learn with others inside a clear framework.
Reflect, review and improve
Connect the activity to the learning goal, gather feedback and adjust the next session when needed.
02 · THE OUTCOME
More than moves
By partnering with organizations across countries and contexts, we work to ensure that every learner has access to education supporting cognitive, emotional and social development.
A method designed to travel
The Chess Learning Institute exists to refine and share this methodology beyond Denmark, helping partners adapt chess-based learning to their own educational and social contexts. Learn more about the institute and the experience behind the work.
