Incarceration disrupts everything. Identity, agency, social connection, the ability to plan for a future. Rehabilitation programs aim to rebuild these, but some lack tools that individuals can use consistently and on their own time.

Chess, and our approach towards it, offers something that we believe most rehabilitation would greatly benefit from. We create spaces where progress is visible and undeniable, which is crucial to sustaining one’s self-worth and positive view of themselves.
Each game teaches planning, impulse control, and how to manage failure with dignity. Over time, sustained engagement builds self-efficacy and resilience — which help to enable successful reintegration.

We’ve seen this work in correctional education settings, and are setting the foundations for a much larger initiative here in Denmark. Incarcerated individuals who engage with structured chess programs demonstrate measurable improvements in behavior, focus, and confidence. And more importantly, they report experiencing agency and growth despite being in an environment that strips both away.
We’re committed to expanding access to chess-based learning in correctional systems, working with rehabilitation programs and prison education initiatives to bring these tools to individuals for whom traditional education has already failed.
